Software for new computer
1. Pre-installed junk
Get rid of most of this nag-ware. It gives you say 30 days or 10 uses, or some limited version that you usually don't need e.g Symantec Norton Internet Security).
Until fairly recently, AVG antivirus software was a useful tool.
Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender builtin. It seems to be good enough not to need anything else.
However Malwarebytes is widely recommended, and it deals with a different type of problem. According to
https://www.howtogeek.com/225385/what%E2%80%99s-the-best-antivirus-for-windows-10-is-windows-defender-good-enough/
"...Malwarebytes claims to be able to replace your traditional antivirus entirely, but we disagree with this. It uses completely different strategies for protecting you: antivirus will block or quarantine harmful programs that find their way to your computer, while Malwarebytes attempts to stop harmful software from ever reaching your computer in the first place. Since it doesn't interfere with traditional antivirus programs, we recommend you run both programs for the best protection ... We definitely recommend you read the entire article so you fully understand why we recommend a combination of Windows Defender and Malwarebytes ..."
2. Recovery stuff - worth keeping as is. Never had to use it, but re-assuring you "could" recover if needed.
3. Manufacturer supplied trackpad, audio, graphics etc managers as 2 above.
4. Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player - keep.
5. Why not use Windows provided software or widely known and used software instead.
Use vlc for everything audio and video e.g:- ".mov" file.
Don't be tempted to go for Apple's Quick Time or iTunes. Quick Time was originally the only way to play .mov. Then iTunes came along and had Quick Time incorporated. iTunes and Quick Time have bloated as Apple keep on adding more features.
Old versions of iTunes (v7) are still usable to download podcasts.
6. Microsoft Office (MO) full version (nag-ware)
7. Microsoft Wordpad - a pathetic word processor. If you blunder into it you will regret dealing with it.
Install LibreOffice (successor to OpenOffice). It is almost fuctionally equivalent to MO [macros are not compatible]. It has an easy to use booklet printing feature.
8. Other Freeware stuff
The freeware cleanup tool CCleaner is worth using at least weekly. Among many other things, it cleans the registry.
Useful freeware sites include http://www.snapfiles.com and http://www.filehippo.com/
